Allegheny County Democratic Committee Declares "You're On Your Own This Year, Mr. President"

The Allegheny County Democratic Committee today announced the appointment -- not the election, the appointment; anyone have a set of bylaws handy? -- of several new officers.

(One curious change involves the treasurer's position; unless a resignation by Edward Abes was not publicized, why was a new treasurer appointed?)

Maintaining tradition, the county committee's statement did not address the long-ambiguous status of Edward Grattan (right) or Jack Cambest (left), which suggests any attempted housecleaning did not involve the sub-basement.

The lineup announced today -- unproven show horses -- sends an unmistakable message to the Obama campaign preparing for the November election: You are entirely on your own, Mr. President, in Allegheny County.

Organizing for America and MoveOn were already doing most of the substantive lifting for Democrats in Allegheny County, but the press release from the Allegheny County Democratic Committee suggests "most" has become "all."

UPDATE: A couple of sources claim that the reorganization did not comply with the committee's written rules ("for a reason," one wrote -- without identifying that reason). Another correspondent states that the average age of the four announced officers is 70, suggesting "somebody out there does not want this Committee to be very active." Our preliminary hunch: the county Democratic Committee just became a redhead's stepchild.

Do you not understand that the committee is the local democratic party? (and that Obama is a democrat?)

They're Democrats. THAT'S why they didn't comply with the rules.

Droll and incisive, all in one. You've done it again CM. Happy New Year!

here's the difference said...

If the Democrats broke the rules on replacing Jim Burns, that is wrong and it is good they get called on it but, when Republicans break the rules people get tortured in secret prisons. This is one reason why there are more Democrats than Republicans.

Obama & his team need a good set of folks here who know the city in & out. The morons there now have no idea what's going on.

Looking at Rule VIII #9 in the by-laws it appears that the party did violate the correct procedures.

Right?

You are right about two things, Fitzgerald is throwing his weight around and the Committee is worthless.

The acdc simply abandoned its pretense of operating an organization of legitimate governance constituted in furtherance of national political objectives. Shed it like an exoskeleton. They're a gang on the make.

Thing is, the DNC can probably work with that.

(Unless it decides it can't or doesn't have to and can replace it with something more constructive and durable. At the drop of a dime.)

County Dem Committee is just about worthless, true, but City Committee is even worse where many Chairs are dictators who are not in it for anything but themselves, some do not even hold meetings they just control everything. We thought Burns was going to improve things, now it looks like it could actually get worse. Anybody know whether Fitz supported Hilary or Obama, either way you're right Obama will have to take care of things himself. Like last time.

State Committee suspends its fall meeting too. The interesting news from the Pennsylvania State Democratic Committee Meeting this weekend is that it has decided to cancel its upcoming fall meeting in a presidential campaign year. Not to sound too naive, but how short sited is Pennsylvania’s State Democratic Committee? One would think that in a presidential campaign year the Democratic Party would be trying to get out the vote and energize their base at that meeting. Moreover, there is a race for Attorney General, which is a seat that the Democrats have not won for thirty years, that is going to need help in the fall. It seems as though the leadership just does not want to lead anymore.

The reason the State Committee cancelled its September meeting was to avoid dragging the committee people to a remote location near Harrisburg and effectively lose a whole weekend of campaigning in their hometowns (where they might - might - be of some use) during the the most important time of the year for grass roots efforts.

Sitting in a hotel conference room 3 hours from your target voters, listening to yet another tribute to Catherine Baker Knoll (or whatever they do at these non-endorsement meetings), is a complete waste of time.
